Around the World in Picture Books: South Korea

20/8/2016

Korean children's picture books are some of the best in the world and they have won international awards such as the Bologna Ragazzi Award. Here we highlight two hardcover picture books which will be given away to two lucky winners who buy any books from oyezbookstore.com in the month of August.
1. The Hen
A hen sees several animals with their young and felt envious. Although she laid eggs, they kept disappearing. One day, she laid some eggs and at night, a weasel came to steal the eggs. She was very sad. What can she do to successfully hatch her own cute baby?

This simple story is a tale of perseverance and cooperation.

2. It's Fine
This book reminds me of Emila Yusof's little Dina.

This little girl observes different animals and insects. The ant is small but has strength to pick up a leaf. The hedgehog is prickly though small which offers it great protection.. The snake is without legs but can move everywhere. What about a child? What can a child do?  This book aims to help children observe the living creatures around them in a fun and humorous way. The illustrations are bright with soft colouring.

12th August is World Elephant Day

I wonder how many people like me grew up in our early years with an elephant toy or book in our bedroom.  Or remember a favourite elephant movie - Dumbo with his big flapping ears, the hero of the circus or Hathi of Kipling's Jungle Book. To most city dwellers however, we know very little about elephants except as the large grey lumbering beasts we see chained up in the zoo or those the children ride on for a special treat.
Elephants are the largest land animals, they live in a matriarchal society with a female leader.  They are intelligent creatures and learn easily; that’s why they are used in countries such as Thailand to carry out heavy logging work. The white elephant has always been regarded as a royal beast and figures in Thai and Indian culture. Yes we love and admire the elephant because they demonstrate, like us, care for each other and social intelligence. Yet we are destroying them.

Today, August 12th is World Elephant Day dedicated to saving the elephant and its habitat, combating illegal poaching, eliminating trade in ivory, educating handlers of working elephants to provide proper care and encourage people wherever possible to visit well managed sanctuaries so we may gain a better understanding of these beautiful animals.

Oyez!Books has published a number of books on this majestic animal.

Siti the Elephant is a lush and beautiful book which should have pride of place in any school or home library.

Written by Rossiti Aishah Rashidi and illustrated by Farah Ashiela Samsuri, this book aims to educate children in an interesting way on the dangers faced by elephants, some directly caused by human activities.

A conservationist who writes from her heart and experience, Rossiti spends a lot of time researching about these animals and in some cases is directly involved in their care at the zoo and sanctuary.

Oyez!Books is reprinting the hardcover version of Siti the Elephant so watch out for it!

For one of our authors, a ride on an elephant as a child proved to be so unforgettable that when he grew up to become an artist he dedicated himself to drawing elephants. This is none other Yusof Gajah whose paintings and illustrations of elephants never fail to delight. Yusof's elephants are not always elephants - they do amazing things like becoming the alphabet or even a teapot! In addition, they have decorated banners adorning trees at the famous Nami Island in South Korea.

One picture book that Yusof has illustrated is Dill the Little ELephant, a story of a baby elephant in search of its parents.

This story was originally a German folktale, retold by Volker Wolf.

Apart from the fascinating and touching story, this book contains a variety of Yusof Gajah's illustrations of different animals that can be found in the Malaysian forest.

Yet another picture book that Yusof illustrated was written by award-winning Chinese author Xiao Mao. How to Teach An Elephant to Jump was first published in China by China Children Publishing House and we hope to have the Bahasa Malaysia version next year!

The elephant can do many things but can it jump? Read the book to find out!

A Yusof Gajah classic is of course The Real Elephant, first published as Gajah Sejati by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.

It's now in a big book edition by Oyez!Books. This book won the Noma Concours Grand Prize and catapulted Yusof into the world of children's book illustrations.

We would like to point out a book on an elephant by another veteran artist - Jaafar Taib.

Damai
tells the story of a baby elephant who travels throughout the Malaysian forest in search of a sanctuary for animals.

Apparently Jaafar Taib's second home is the forest so one can expect gorgeous and realistic illustrations of the forest as well as animals.

This book seems to be out of print but we hope it will be republished.

One more book we want to include is Alahai Anak Gajah by Nor Azhar Ishak who is also a mentee of Yusof Gajah.

This simple and sweet story of a baby elephant wandering away from home and getting caught by a crocodile reminds one of Kipling's How the Elephant got its Trunk in his Just-so Stories.

It's wonderful to have all these books by Malaysian authors and illustrators about the elephant. Have you read any children's books on elephants published locally that you would like to share? Do let us know in the comments below.
