This Raya, Oyez!Books together with our talented Art Editor / Creative Development Director, Emila Yusof, has come up with two designs for sampul duit (money packet) and with the help of our partner, Creative United, two must-have sling bags. The Happy Family design by Emila Yusof is quintessential Emila, and we just have to smile as it gets us right into the Raya spirit which is all about family and balik kampung. For collectors of sampul raya, this has the benefit too of being an all-year-round sampul duit. The Kampungku design is by Elly Nor Suria. Oyez! has published a Kampung colouring book by Elly and now you can get inspired and colour yours too. The colourful patchwork of kampung scenery is so lovely, we are so proud to have it on this all-year-round sampul duit. For your information, Elly also paints her kampung scenes on larger canvas and accepts commission. Do check her out on FB. We have packed these sampul raya and sling bags into special gift packages at attractive prices for you so why not get them as gifts for this Raya celebration? These designs are incorporated into our Hari Raya cards and we are going to be busy during the next month sending out cards - yes, at Oyez! we are quite traditional and love sending greeting cards.

The 3rd of March is World Wildlife Day and this year's theme is 'Listen to the Young Voices'. According the United Nations, young people between the ages of 10 and 24 make up one quarter of the world’s population and as the future leaders and decision makers of the world, they must be encouraged to act at both local and global levels to protect endangered wildlife. Oyez! has published a number of books on wildlife such as Puteri Tioman and Siti the Elephant and stories around wildlife such as Under the Sea, Pip's Peculiar Problem and Where is Owly?. We will also be launching Belang the Tiger during our Children's Book Week from 18-26th March. Author Rossiti Aishah Rashidi is a committed conservationist and wonderful educator. Watch out for more information on our Children's Book Week. In line with World Wildlife Day, we are promoting a range of beautiful wildlife cards from Rossiti's books for your collection. Send them on or frame them up, they remind us of the wildlife we must treasure. Cards from illustrations by Lim Lay Koon for the book Pip's Peculiar Problem are also available. Lay Koon's sense of humour translates into all her illustrations. Beautiful and fun, these cards are delightful and thoughtful. We are celebrating International Women's Day on 8th March. The theme this year is #BeBoldForChange. We have a special gift pack for you designed by artist Emila Yusof so watch out for it! Do you usually wake up in the morning happy or grumpy? Well, the 20th of March is the International Day of Happiness! Take the pledge: Now, don't you think we should all be reminded of this everyday? For us at Oyez!Books, there's nothing more wonderful than the happy smile of a child. It makes everything we do so much more meaningful and fun. Whether in the books our authors create or in the events we do, we aim to create happiness. The International Day of Forests is on 21st March and we wish to highlight the book, We Love Trees by Rossiti Aishah Rashidi and illustrated by Evi Shelvia. We are working on a Bahasa Malaysia version as many parents have asked for it. A favourite activity is pot painting with Rossiti as children learn to recognise leaves of plants and paint them on a pot that they will surely be proud to keep. There are several more special days to observe in March. These special days highlight important issues around the world. Do check out the UN website for more information and resources. You can download posters, watch videos and sign up to be a part of change.

This blog first appeared in emilayusof.com For our Around the World in Picture Books Giveaway for October, here is a beautiful picture book from Spain!
Here are some lovely illustrations from this book: Latin American countries certainly produce very beautiful picture books. Do you know, Oyez!Books will be publishing a book from Brazil. The original language is Portuguese but we will be publishing it in Bahasa Malaysia. This is due out next year. Here is an illustration from the book, Na Janela Do Trem - Through the Window of A Train.
Jimmy Liao is one of Taiwan's most well-known illustrators. He has illustrated many beautiful picture books with his bright colours and in black and white. Our selection today is The Blue Stone. Once there was a blue stone who remained for thousands of years deep within the forest. One day, it was broken into two and one part of it was taken away to build different things according to the whims of humans. It was made into a statue, a sign, a tombstone, a love pendant and so on. The blue stone witnessed human sorrow and love as it went through its different forms. It longed to return to the forest where it could lie in peace. Finally, the blue stone was broken into small pieces where the wind carried it back to the forest. This is a bittersweet story that Jimmy Liao is well-known for. According to different interviews, his art started to change after he'd had leukemia and recovered. Although the colours of his illustrations are bright, yet the story portrays deep emotion such as alienation and loss. Jimmy's illustrations have also been created in virtual reality format. Wouldn't you like to step into his world? But for now, you may be the lucky winner of this book!
Korean children's picture books are some of the best in the world and they have won international awards such as the Bologna Ragazzi Award. Here we highlight two hardcover picture books which will be given away to two lucky winners who buy any books from oyezbookstore.com in the month of August.

Singapore's children's picture books are growing in numbers and there are several writers and illustrators who have made their name internationally. Here we highlight two books that were published in what can be said to be the early days of children's picture book publishing in Singapore. 1. The Bird Who Was Afraid Of Heights Writtenby Farah Bagharib-Kaltz, illustrated by Eeshaun, published by Straits Times Press Eddie was a mynah bird who lived behind an abandoned old house. Eddie was afraid of heights which was rather a problem. But Eddie had a good and only friend, Matt the rat and they got along just fine. However, one day, Matt was captured and Eddie had to find hidden resources within himself to save his friend. The line illustrations in flat colours are effectively used in this picture book. The illustrations will certainly encourage children to pick up their pencils and start drawing. 2. Guai Wu the Chinese Elf Written by Adeline Foo, illustrated by Christine Lim Simpson
The detailed illustrations are a joy and complements the story very well. We are giving away picture books from different countries each month as part of our Around the World in Picture Books year-long programme. Get a chance to win with any purchase from Oyez! online bookstore!
In June, we head off to Switzerland, to Baobab Books, a wonderful publisher of children's books.
Baobab Books have selected some of the finest books from around the world to add to their list and we are proud that they have selected and published two from Malaysia. The first book is Jainal Amambing's The Magic Buffalo which had won a prize in UNESCO's Norma Concours. A popular illustrator from Sabah, Jainal has written and illustrated several picture books which have been published by Oyez!Books. These include Longhouse Days, The Proud Butterfly and the Strange Tree, The Wonderful Sparrow and of course The Magic Buffalo. The story of Sansarinaga, a young orphan boy who found friends is infused with the magic of Jainal's illustrations which also showed scenes of village life in Sabah. The second book is one of Yusof Gajah's classic - Where is My Red Ball? As the book is targeted at very young children, Baobab has published it using child-friendly, non-toxic materials in awareness that babies like to bite and chew their books! These images of different coloured elephants are unforgettable and indeed this book has been translated into German and Arab. Watch out for a Yusof Gajah and Jainal Amambing collection to be published by Oyez!Books to add to your library of Malaysian picture books!
We are introducing three non-fiction illustrated books courtesy of Gilt Edge Publishing, New Zealand. These three books are carefully planned, using photographs with simple repetitive text to develop literacy and introduce nature to preschoolers. Curious young children will love these books as a parent or teacher reads or talks them through the books. They will learn to observe and see the world around them and to appreciate it. They will also gain confidence as they build up their knowledge. A note of warning - you may find yourself overwhelmed by more questions! Each book also comes with notes for the parent or teacher with suggestions for discussion points and activities to reinforce learning. 1. Here Comes the Bees 2. From Egg to Frog 3. This is My Home
